Feria del Barrio (San Sebastián)
Saturday: open-air youth party until dawn. Sunday: procession and pilgrimage to saint's hermitage. Neighbours in flamenco dress accompany saint on horseback and in carriages. Very authentic local celebration.
Semana Santa
Modest but emotional processions in Cómpeta, mainly Holy Thursday and Good Friday. Religious images carried through steep village streets. In Nerja and Torrox, larger processions. In Cómpeta the floats climb impossible hills. Very authentic, less crowded than Málaga.
Art Walk
Local and foreign artists open studios to exhibit painting, sculpture, photography. Artistic route through town over several days. Reflects Cómpeta's international artistic community.
Cruces de Mayo
May Crosses Festival. Children and families make flower-decorated crosses. Procession from square to 'La Cruz del Monte'. Community picnics afterwards.
Noche de San Juan
Bonfires on the beach, music, midnight swim. Tradition of jumping waves. The most magical celebration of summer. Write a wish and burn it in the bonfire.
Feria de Cómpeta
~4 days in honour of St. James. Daytime fair with music, contests, free paella at noon. Night: fairground with rides and orchestras until dawn. Fireworks on first and last day. Monday = Hangover Day (rides half price). Very family atmosphere.
Festival Cuevas de Nerja
The Cueva de Nerja music festival is now held in the outdoor Auditorio Manuel del Campo in the cave complex gardens. Performances inside the cave ceased after 2019 for conservation. Check the current annual programme and tickets on the official Cueva de Nerja website.
Noche del Vino
Festival of Tourist Interest. Traditional grape stomping, free Moscatel wine and migas at noon. Folk music, flamenco and concerts until dawn. Arrive early, it gets very crowded. Grape stomping at 11am is a must.
Festival Tres Culturas
Frigiliana’s Festival of Three Cultures celebrates the village’s Arab, Jewish and Christian heritage with concerts, markets, food and cultural activities. Dates and programme vary by edition; in 2026 the official municipal dates are 27-30 August. Check the current programme before travelling.
Fiesta del Día de las Migas
Thousands of free migas portions. Music, dance and typical products. Free migas served for everyone. Arrive early. Incredible atmosphere.
Mercado semanal
Weekly market with fresh local produce, crafts. Local fruits and vegetables at good prices. The area's avocados are spectacular.
Getting Here
Málaga Airport (AGP) is the main gateway. A car is very useful for rural villages, trailheads and flexible day trips, although buses serve some larger towns and the coast.
Driving
Mountain roads can be narrow and winding. Drive slowly, expect cyclists and oncoming traffic around blind bends, and be ready to yield safely on narrow sections.
Parking
Free parking at Plaza Axarquía. Covered parking spaces are available free of charge every day. Warning: No parking on Saturdays (9 am–2 pm) due to the local market.
Animals on Roads
Watch out for wildlife, livestock, and pets (mountain goats, sheep, dogs) on the road, especially at dawn/dusk.
Walking in Town
Village streets can be slippery, especially when wet or early in the morning. Wear shoes with good grip.
Weather
Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and generally mild winters. Conditions can change quickly in the mountains, especially with altitude and wind; check the forecast before hiking.
Water
Tap water is safe but has high lime content. We recommend bottled water for drinking and coffee machines.
Plugs
Standard European Type F (Schuko). 230V / 50Hz. Travelers from the UK/US will need an adapter.
Money
Cards are widely accepted, but carrying some cash is useful for small businesses, markets or remote rural stops. ATMs are available in Cómpeta.
Language
English/German are common in tourist spots. In local bars, basic Spanish is appreciated and often helpful.
Meal Times
Lunch is commonly later than in northern Europe, often around 13:30-15:30, and dinner frequently starts after 20:00. Some small independent businesses close for part of the afternoon; always check the specific place.
Fire Safety
Extreme fire risk. No cigarette butts or outdoor fires. BBQs may be prohibited in summer by law.
EV Charging
Dedicated charging stations for electric vehicles (EV) are located within the covered parking area at Plaza Axarquía.
